There’s a growing trend out there that should alarm you if you work in HR.
The trend is that of employees seeking to solve workplace disputes through litigation, and they’re successfully pulling HR managers and consultants into the web of liability. In fact, the definition of “employer,” under the Fair Labor Standards Act and the Family and Medical Leave Act, provides for personal liability of company managers and officials.
As an HR professional, your employer may have a business policy that covers you under various circumstances, but an employer can also choose to distance itself from an employee individually named in a lawsuit – especially if the employer feels the employee acted outside the scope of employment.

The ash cloud produced by the eruption of the Grimsvotn volcano has affected air travel throughout parts of Europe. Many travelers started to compare travel insurance after news of the eruption broke. However, an article from MSNBC indicates the volcanic activity could be over soon.
Iceland’s volcanic eruption has died down and is no longer spewing out ash, officials said on Wednesday as airlines began to get back to normal after canceling about 1,000 flights in northern Europe.
European air traffic controllers said they expected about 700 flights to be canceled on Wednesday, but Eurocontrol added that traffic in European airspace could return to normal Thursday.

Citizens Property Insurance Corporation was created by the Florida legislature. Generally, Citizens’ goal is to pay claims from funds acquired through insurance premiums and other investments, but sometimes this is not possible. According to Fla. Stat. § 627.351(6), if Citizens’ funds for paying claims are depleted by a hurricane or other catastrophic loss, Citizens may impose surcharges and other assessments on Citizens’ policyholders, as well as other Florida insurance companies and policyholders to make up for deficits in Citizens’ reserves. To help explain its surcharge and assessment powers, Citizens has provided a brief summary of these powers on its website.

Verizon Wireless and Payfone, a mobile payment platform, have teamed up to let customers shop online and pay for items by adding the purchase price to a cell phone bill. Shoppers complete online transactions by entering a cell phone number, and the purchase is added to that number’s bill; smart phones, tablets, and PCs can all be used.
Verizon customers can also link their Payfone accounts to a credit card or debit card. This might be handy since larger purchases may exceed transaction limits. And the service will have a way to intelligently route payments to the right funding source based on rules and preferences.
